（《律本》云：「年滿二十者，能耐寒、熱、風、雨、飢、渴、持戒、一食，忍惡言及毒蟲十事，是丈夫相。」《僧祇》云：「二十已上、七十已下，有所堪能，是丈夫位，得與受戒。若過若減，縱有所堪，及是應法而無所堪者，並不得與授戒。」）

(The Vinaya root text says: “One who is fully twenty years old is able to endure cold, heat, wind, rain, hunger, thirst, holding the precepts, eating one meal a day, bearing harsh words, and poisonous insects—these ten things constitute the mark of a man.” The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya says: “One who is twenty or older and seventy or younger, who possesses endurance and capability, is in the state of a man and may be granted the precepts. If older or younger, even if he has capability, or if he is of appropriate age but lacks capability, in all such cases he must not be granted the precepts.”)
