（《善見》云：「尼者，女也；摩者，母也。」重尼，故稱之。《智度論》云：「尼得無量律儀故，應次比丘後。佛以儀式不便故，在沙彌後。」《愛道經》云：「女人但惑色，畜眾，知須臾事，故制依大僧。」）

(The Shanjian says: "'Ni' means female; 'ma' means mother." Because of respect for bhikṣuṇīs, they are so designated. The Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom says: "Because bhikṣuṇīs obtain immeasurable moral restraint, they should be ranked next after monks. But because the Buddha deemed their ceremonial etiquette inconvenient, they are placed behind śrāmaṇeras." The Aidao jing says: "Women are merely deluded by physical appearance; when keeping followers, their understanding lasts only a short while; hence it was instituted that they must rely on the great monks.")
