（《摩得勒伽論》云：「云何布薩？捨諸惡不善法，證得白法究竟梵行。半月自觀犯與不犯，清淨身口也。」《善見》云：「說戒法，得知正法久住。」《毘尼母》：「清淨者，名布薩義。」）

(The *Mātṛkā-śāstra* says: 'What is upoṣadha? It is to abandon all bad and unwholesome phenomena, and to realize pure phenomena, reaching the perfection of the brahma-practice. It is to observe oneself each half-month regarding whether one has committed an offense or not, purifying body and speech.' The *Samantapāsādikā* says: 'By the rite of upoṣadha, one knows that the true Dharma will remain long.' The *Vinayamātṛkā* [says]: 'Purity is the meaning of upoṣadha.')
