（佛言：「若王、賊、水、火、病人、非人、惡蟲，及有餘緣者，若床座少、露濕、天雨、布薩多、夜已久，或鬪諍，說法等夜久者，略說戒。」《五分》、《僧祇》並為多緣開聽略說。說前方便，一如廣法，隨緣緩急，廣略說之。《律》中具有三五略說，隨緣遠近，文非明了。今依《毘尼母論》云，若說序，問清淨訖，應言：）

(The Buddha said: 'If there are kings, thieves, water, fire, sick persons, non-humans, vicious beasts, or other obstacles, or if seats are scarce, dew is damp, it rains, there are many upoṣadha [matters], the night has grown late, or due to disputes or preaching the Dharma the night has grown late, one recites the precepts in brief.' Both the *Mahiśāsaka-vinaya* and the *Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya* permit an abbreviated recitation on account of numerous conditions. The preparatory procedures prior to the recitation are entirely the same as in the extensive rite; one recites them extensively or in brief according to the urgency of the conditions. In the *Vinaya* there are three or five forms of abbreviated recitation; depending on the proximity of the obstacles, the texts are not explicit. Now, relying on the *Vinayamātṛkā-śāstra*, it says that after reciting the preface and inquiring about purity, one should say:)
