(The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: "One should remonstrate with the teacher with gentle words. If he does not accept it, the upādhyāya should be abandoned, and one should depart far away. As for a niśraya-master, one takes one's robes and bowl, departs beyond the boundary to stay overnight, and the next day one should return and rely on another monk for niśraya." The Daśādhyāya-vinaya states: "There are four kinds of upādhyāyas: if he gives both Dharma and food, it is called a pleasant dwelling; if he gives Dharma but not food, one seeks food elsewhere, and it is called an arduous dwelling; if he gives food but not Dharma, one apologizes and departs; if he gives neither Dharma nor food, without asking whether it is day or night, one should immediately abandon him and depart." Because the original intention of renouncing the household life was to set one's mind on the path, being surrounded by mundane thoughts conversely binds one to saṃsāra; hence the Tattvasiddhi states: "Because of clinging to dependents and being fond of one's dwelling, one falls to be reborn among the pretas of Kaliṅga and the like." The rest is explained in detail as in the Commentary.)
