右道宣比丘，以唐貞觀中遊諸律肆，博求異訣，但見誦文信語，部秩成宗，及至討論赴要，曾未機正，乃顧命筆墨，依宗本撰次。雖不窮源究末，庶得決事行用，願以塵露山海照于萬代，志之所及乃亦遠矣。

The above bhikṣu Daoxuan, during the Zhenguan era of the Tang, visited various vinaya schools and broadly sought different instructions. He only saw people reciting texts and believing words, organizing traditions into lineages, yet when it came to debating and reaching the essentials, they had not yet been timely and correct. He thus set his brush and ink to writing, compiling and arranging based on the fundamental tradition. Although it does not exhaust the source or scrutinize the branches, it aspires to settle matters for practical implementation. Wishing that this dew and dust may join the mountains and oceans to illumine myriad generations, where his aspiration reaches is indeed far.
