When one departs like this, there must be something achieved; when it is thus completed, one returns by night. In general, across the vinayas of the various schools, the taking of leave also differs. When masters of later times applied these matters, each adhered to one school and did not use the other schools; this is also [a valid] tradition. Now, examining the texts of these various vinayas, using them interchangeably as done previously is fully permissible. Why is this so? If one knows for certain that the upcoming business requires one night, then one uses the method of taking leave for one night from the *Daśādhyāya-vinaya*, and up to seven nights is also like this; or if thirty-nine nights are required, one also uses the karman procedure of taking leave from the *Daśādhyāya-vinaya*. If one requires seven days, fifteen days, or one month, then one uses the method of taking leave from the text of the *Caturvargika-vinaya*. If it is indefinite as to how many days the upcoming business will take to finish, then one uses the method of taking leave from the text of the *Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya*. Later, there were people who did not understand, and recited the karman text of the *Caturvargika-vinaya* to perform for others the completion of a *Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya* matter without reciting the thirty-nine nights; all of these are non-dharmic and invalid. How is this known? Because the matters cited in the karman texts are each different, we know it is invalid. Now, fearing that people will apply them erroneously, I have comprehensively excerpted the standard karman texts from the vinayas of the various schools and presented them to the worthy ones, leaving it to their discretion to perform the rituals according to what each matter requires.
