"You must under no circumstances tell lies, down to joking. If a bhikṣu, untruthfully and without having them himself, says of himself: 'I have attained the dharmas of a superior person—attained dhyāna, attained liberation, attained samādhi, attained the four formless concentrations, attained the fruit of a srotāpanna, the fruit of a sakṛdāgāmin, the fruit of an anāgāmin, the fruit of an arhat, and devas and nāgas come, and ghosts and spirits come to make offerings to me'—he is not a śramaṇa, not a son of the Śākya. The parable-speaker said, 'Just as when a great boulder is split in two, it can never be reunited, so too is a bhikṣu: having committed this pārājika dharma, he will never again achieve the conduct of a bhikṣu.' In this matter, you must not do so as long as your life lasts; are you able to uphold this?"
