(At one time in a dwelling place, the two assemblies of the saṃgha obtained a great amount of robes and goods to be distributed. At that time the bhikṣu-saṃgha was numerous, while the bhikṣuṇīs were few. The Buddha said: "Divide it into two shares. If there are no bhikṣuṇīs, but only śikṣamāṇās, divide it also into two shares. If there are only śrāmaṇerīs, divide it also into two shares. If none of the three classes is present, the bhikṣu-saṃgha should divide it. If the bhikṣuṇīs are numerous and the bhikṣus few, or if none are present, divide it into two shares. If there are not even any śrāmaṇeras, the bhikṣuṇīs should divide it." Once the goods are obtained, upon returning to one's own assembly, all must carry out a karman to distribute them. The reason it is called 'saṃgha acquisition' is that the donor's intention is universal and equal in one transformation, and the goods extend universally to the ten directions; as long as there are bhikṣus or bhikṣuṇīs, they all partake of a share, hence it is called 'saṃgha acquisition'. One must still use the saṃgha's formal karman to preclude those arriving from the ten directions; once the procedure is performed, those present divide it among themselves. The karman is as follows.)
