(Gifts acquired are of two kinds: First, when monastics or laypeople act as dānapatis, wishing to make their donated goods extend universally to the ten directions so that all generate the merit of giving. The Vinaya states: "At one time in a certain dwelling place, the present saṃgha obtained a great amount of robes and goods to be distributed. When distributing the robes, visiting bhikṣus arrived repeatedly, making the robe distribution exhausting. The Buddha said: 'One person should be appointed to distribute them; by a jñapti-dvitīya-karman he is granted proper authority, and then he distributes them.'" This is as explained in "Light Goods of the Deceased". Second, if there are robes and goods belonging to a deceased member of the five classes of disciples, the Buddha said: "They should entirely belong to the saṃgha." However, because the saṃgha differs between the saṃgha of the four directions and the present saṃgha, goods are accordingly distinguished into heavy and light. Moreover, with regard to the places of distribution among heavy and light goods, they are not of a single category, as detailed in the ten sections below.)
