Furthermore, a corpse has five bad qualities: first, impurity; second, foul stench; third, having terror; fourth, causing fear in people so that evil spirits gain advantage; fifth, being a dwelling place for ferocious beasts and non-humans. A person who violates the precepts has five faults: having impure actions of body, speech, and mind, just like that corpse's impurity; I say this person is also like this. Or having impure actions of body, speech, and mind, so that bad reputation spreads, just like the foul stench emitting from that corpse; I say this person is also like this. Having impure actions of body, speech, and mind, so that good bhikṣus dread and avoid him, just like that corpse terrifies people; I say this person is also like this. Having impure actions of body, speech, and mind, causing good bhikṣus to give rise to repugnance upon seeing him, saying: 'How could I ever see such an evil person?', just as when someone sees a corpse and feels terror, allowing evil spirits to gain advantage; I say this person is also like this. One who has impure actions of body, speech, and mind dwells together with unwholesome people, just as ferocious beasts and non-humans dwell together in that place of the corpse; I say this person is also like this. These are the five faults of a person who violates the precepts, like that corpse. Breaking the precepts has five faults: harming oneself, being rebuked by the wise, having an evil reputation spread, feeling regret at the time of death, and falling into the evil destinies upon death. Upholding the precepts has five virtues (the reverse of the above statements). Furthermore, there are five matters: being unable to obtain what one has not yet obtained; failing to protect what has been obtained; feeling shame when entering any assembly, whether an assembly of kṣatriyas, an assembly of brahmins, an assembly of householders, or an assembly of bhikṣus; having śramaṇas and brahmins proclaim one's evils within countless yojanas; and an evil person who breaks the precepts falling into the evil destinies upon death. Upholding the precepts has five virtues (the reverse of the above statements).
