"Let the saṃgha, bhadantas, listen! If the time has arrived for the saṃgha, let the saṃgha consent: with this bowl, ask the senior monk in sequence. The motion is like this." (Having made this motion, one should take [it] and offer [it] to the senior monk. If the senior monk does not take it, offer it to that [other] bhikṣu; that bhikṣu should take it. He should not refuse to take it out of protecting the saṃgha; nor should he, on this ground, accept and keep the lowest bowl—if he accepts it, [it is a] duṣkṛta. If the senior monk takes it, one should give it to the senior monk, take the senior monk's bowl, and give it to the next monk. If the next monk takes it, [proceed] just as with the senior monk. Thus it is passed along in turn down to the junior monk.)
