Procedure for Announcing Entry and Exit for Eating Separately from the Assembly. (Eating separately from the assembly means four persons or more than four persons. If two persons or three persons, they may eat at will. If four persons or more, they should divide into two groups and eat in turn. If a bhikṣu has a proper occasion for eating separately from the assembly and wishes to join to eat, he should stand and announce:) 'I have such an occasion for eating separately from the assembly, and wish to seek entry.' (The Buddha said: 'He should be permitted to enter according to seniority under the theras.' The occasions for eating separately from the assembly are: during sickness, during robe-making, during robe-distribution, when traveling on foot, when traveling by boat, when a great gathering convenes, and when śramaṇas bestow food. If a bhikṣu has no proper occasion for eating separately from the assembly, that bhikṣu should immediately stand and announce:) 'I have no occasion among this separate group meal, and wish to seek departure.' (The Buddha said: 'Permit him to depart.' If a bhikṣu eats separately from the assembly [without cause], it is a prāyaścittika for every swallow. If he has an occasion but does not announce it, it is a duṣkṛta.)
