At that time, many bhikṣus went to the World-Honoured One, bowed their heads at his feet, sat to one side, and said to the World-Honoured One: "The Bhadanta is the master of the Dharma. You speak of 'training'; what is training?" The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "Training in the precepts is the reason it is called 'training.' What is training in the precepts? It is the higher training in morality, the higher training in mind, and the higher training in wisdom; therefore it is called 'training.' When one undertakes the higher training in morality, the higher training in mind, and the higher training in wisdom, one attains the complete subduing and exhaustion of lust, anger, and delusion. Having attained the exhaustion of lust, anger, and delusion, one does not commit unwholesome deeds and does not associate with evils. Therefore it is called 'training.'" The Buddha spoke thus, and having heard it, the bhikṣus rejoiced, received it with faith and delight, and upheld it.
