At that time, the Buddha addressed the bhikṣus: 'When a bhikṣu goes to the saṃgha, he should first have five dharmas: he should act with a mind of loving-kindness; he should humble himself like a dust rag; he should know well when to sit and when to stand, so that seeing senior elders he should not sit at ease, and seeing junior monks he should not stand up; when he arrives in the saṃgha, he should not engage in miscellaneous talk about worldly matters, but either speak the Dharma himself or invite others to speak the Dharma; if he sees anything improper in the saṃgha and his mind cannot bear it patiently, he should remain silent. Why? For fear of causing division in the saṃgha. A bhikṣu should first have these five dharmas, and only then go to the saṃgha.'
