At that time many monks went to the World-Honoured One, bowed their heads at his feet, sat to one side, and said to the World-Honoured One: "The Great Virtuous One is the master of the Dharma, and speaks of 'training'. What is training?" The Buddha addressed the monks: "One is trained in the precepts, therefore it is called 'training'. What is training in the precepts? The training in higher morality, the training in higher mind, and the training in higher wisdom—therefore it is called 'training'. When one trains in higher morality, trains in higher mind, and trains in higher wisdom, one completely tames greed, hatred, and delusion; after one has completely eradicated greed, hatred, and delusion, one does not commit unwholesome deeds and does not approach evil; therefore it is called 'training'." The Buddha having spoken thus, the monks heard it and joyfully received and upheld it in faith.
