At that time Ānanda was in the Chicken Park at Pāṭaliputra. Then a peacock-feather-crested brahmin came to Ānanda, exchanged greetings, sat to one side, and said to Ānanda: "For what reason did the ascetic Gautama formulate for the monks the training in higher morality, the training in higher pure conduct, and the training in the higher prātimokṣa?" Ānanda replied: "The reason being so is to tame greed, hatred, and delusion and make them end; therefore the World-Honoured One formulated the precepts for the monks." He asked again: "If a monk has attained arhatship with the effluents ended, what does he train in?" Ānanda replied: "With greed, hatred, and delusion ended, he does not commit unwholesome deeds and does not approach evil; having done what was to be done, he is called one beyond training." The brahmin said: "As just stated, he is then one beyond training?" Ānanda replied: "It is so." Having heard this, the peacock-feather-crested brahmin joyfully received and upheld it in faith.
