There are five things that cause the true Dharma to quickly perish. What are the five? A bhikṣu does not receive and recite carefully, tends to forget and make errors, and with incomplete texts teaches other people; since the text is incomplete, its meaning is deficient. This is the first [thing that causes] the true Dharma to quickly perish. Furthermore, a bhikṣu is an eminent person and senior elder in the saṃgha, or revered by an entire country, yet mostly does not uphold the precepts, cultivates only unwholesome phenomena, abandons the practice of precepts, is not diligent and energetic, [claiming] to have obtained what was not obtained, to have entered what was not entered, and to have realized what was not realized. Junior bhikṣus born later imitate his conduct, also mostly breaking precepts, cultivating unwholesome phenomena, abandoning the practice of precepts, and also not being diligent and energetic, [claiming] to have obtained what was not obtained, to have entered what was not entered, and to have realized what was not realized. This is the second [thing that causes] the true Dharma to quickly perish. Furthermore, a bhikṣu of broad learning who upholds the Dharma, upholds the vinaya, and upholds the mātṛkā does not teach what he has recited to other bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, or upāsikās, and then passes away; when he has passed away, it causes the Dharma to be severed and perish. This is the third [thing that causes] the true Dharma to quickly perish. Furthermore, a bhikṣu is difficult to instruct, does not accept good words, and is unable to practice forbearance, so that other good bhikṣus simply cast him aside. This is the fourth [thing that causes] the true Dharma to quickly perish. Furthermore, bhikṣus are fond of quarreling and disputing, reviling one another, disputing with each other, their mouths like knives and swords, mutually seeking out shortcomings. This is the fifth [thing that causes] the true Dharma to quickly perish. Furthermore, there are five things that cause the true Dharma to abide long (the opposite of the sentences above).
