At that time, the Buddha told the bhikṣus, "When a bhikṣu goes into the saṃgha, he should beforehand have five things: he should possess a mind of benevolence; he should humble himself like a dust-cloth; he should be well aware of sitting and standing, not remaining seated comfortably if he sees a senior, and not standing up if he sees a junior; when he arrives in the saṃgha, he should not engage in miscellaneous chatter discussing worldly affairs, but should either preach the Dharma himself or invite another to preach the Dharma; if he sees unacceptable things in the saṃgha and his mind cannot bear them with patience, he should remain silent. Why? Because he fears causing schism in the saṃgha. A bhikṣu should beforehand have these five things, and only then go into the saṃgha."
