Second, the Bodhisattvabhūmi is traditionally said to have been spoken by Maitreya. The original text was spoken by the Buddha Dīpaṃkara and received and upheld by the bodhisattva Padmaprabhā, being successively transmitted and propagated through more than thirty bodhisattvas. Later, there was the bodhisattva *Ibhālaka(?), who manifested an apparition and assumed form, transmitting it to this land. However, the Bodhisattvabhūmi was translated by Dharmakṣema; it is suspected that Dharmakṣema was himself *Ibhālaka. The fourth chapter, "Precepts Chapter," presents the ritual for receiving the precepts: If a bodhisattva has already made the vow for unsurpassable bodhi, then in the presence of a fellow bodhisattva who has already made the vow, who is wise and capable, well versed in the meaning, and able to recite and uphold [the text]—in the presence of this person, having first bowed to their feet, they speak thus: "I, named so-and-so, beg to receive the bodhisattva precepts from the Venerable One. May the Venerable One not begrudge toil and hardship on my account, but out of pity grant permission." (Spoken three times.) Next, rising, they bow to the Buddhas of the ten directions, and again invite the master, saying: "It is my earnest wish that the Venerable One confer upon me, so-and-so, the bodhisattva precepts." (Spoken three times.) Next, they generate the thought: "Before long, I shall obtain an inexhaustible, immeasurable great heap of merit." The master should ask: "Are you a bodhisattva? Have you made the vow for bodhi?" Having finished asking, the master should say: "Listen, Dharma brother! You wish to receive from me all the bodhisattva precepts—namely, the precepts of restraint, the precepts of accumulating wholesome dharmas, and the precepts of benefiting sentient beings. These precepts are the precepts in which all bodhisattvas of the past, future, and present abide. All past bodhisattvas have already trained in them; all future bodhisattvas will train in them; all present bodhisattvas are now training in them. Are you able to receive them?" (Answer: "I can." Spoken three times.) The master should rise, and having himself bowed to the Buddha, speak thus: "Bodhisattva so-and-so, before me, bodhisattva so-and-so, has spoken three times and received the bodhisattva precepts; I serve as witness. May the foremost, unsurpassable Great Masters, the immeasurable Buddhas of all ten directions, directly witness before all sentient beings and all dharmas, and testify that this practitioner, bodhisattva so-and-so, before me, bodhisattva so-and-so, has spoken three times and received the bodhisattva precepts." (Spoken three times.) Afterwards, concluding with praise, the assembly disperses. Such is the ritual of receiving according to the text of the sūtra.
