Seventh, the precept against praising oneself and disparaging others. Praising one's own merit and suppressing the abundant virtue of others causes extreme harm to beings; therefore, it is established as a major offence. It specifically possesses five conditions: 1. The object is someone who has received the precepts and possesses virtue, the same as the first condition above; 2. Having the thought of them; 3. Possessing both praise and disparagement; 4. Praising and disparaging before someone with an evil mind; 5. The other person understands. When these are fulfilled, it constitutes an offence; when a condition is lacking, it is a minor offence. Regarding the text, there are also three parts: first, stating the title and enjoining the cessation of evil; second, enjoining the practice of good; third, presenting the fault and declaring the offence. The first part also has two aspects: first, explaining the matter of violation. Doing it oneself and instructing another both incur major offences. Next, explaining the completion of the karma: an inner mind of greed and arrogance is the cause; envying others for gain is called the condition; skillfully contriving expedients is the method; making this one's business is called the karma. From 'yet a bodhisattva' onward, enjoining the practice of good. Third, from 'if oneself' onward, concluding the offence. All are as in the text.
