Twelfth, the precept against trading that harms compassion. When bodhisattvas support their bodies, in principle they must do so in accord with the Dharma, not contravening compassionate rescue. Now, to trade in human beings and livestock, and to buy and sell coffins, invites worldly reproach and ridicule, deeply defying the aspirations of the Way; hence an offense is instituted. It specifically comprises four conditions: first, being unlawful items; second, knowing them to be such; third, engaging in trade; fourth, the matter being accomplished; whereupon one commits an offense. The text has two parts: first, designating the name and revealing the fault; next, adducing the fault and concluding the offense. When it first mentions 'free people and slaves', the two classes are different; kidnapped by others, they are traded from person to person. If one kidnaps them, it is subsumed under the precept against stealing. The 'six domestic animals' are oxen, horses, pigs, sheep, chickens, and dogs, spoken of tentatively based on domesticated ones. Next, from 'if intentionally' onward, it concludes the offense, as in the text.
