Ninth, Manifestation of Signs. If one receives and obtains the precepts with a mind of superior grade, various signs appear before the Buddhas of the ten directions: cool breezes, extraordinary fragrances, extraordinary sounds, and radiance. The respective bodhisattvas ask their respective Buddhas: 'By what causes and conditions do these signs appear?' Those Buddhas reply: 'As for the manifestation of these signs, in such-and-such direction and such-and-such place, numerous bodhisattvas have completed receiving the bodhisattva precepts through the three declarations before such-and-such a master; they are now requesting witnessing, and therefore these signs manifest.' Those bodhisattvas all rejoice, each and every one saying: 'In such an extremely evil place, that sentient beings endowed with afflictions and evil karma could arouse such an exceptionally supreme mind to receive the bodhisattva precepts is exceedingly rare!' Generating deep compassion, they arouse toward you a mind of firm pure conduct; you should indeed guard and uphold it with wholehearted determination, not begrudging physical life, never allowing it to be broken or violated.
