Fifth, explaining the period of transmission and translation: in the third year of Hongshi of the Great Qin, there was the Tripiṭaka master from the Western regions, Kumārajīva—translated here as Tongshou ('Youthful Life')—who arrived in the Han lands, glorifying the Mahāyāna and upholding the sacred teachings. In the Xiaoyao Garden (some say in Caotang Temple), he transmitted and translated over three hundred fascicles and more than fifty works of sūtras and treatises. From a single Sanskrit copy, the tenth chapter, 'Mind-Ground', was recited out last, forming a text in two fascicles. The upper fascicle explains the bodhisattva stages, and the lower fascicle explains the bodhisattva's vinaya deportment. Just as the translation was completed, the śramaṇas Huirong, Daoxiang, and over eight hundred others requested to receive the precepts from him. Rong and the others recorded them in writing, and all chanted and upheld them together. Furthermore, following the verses of the lower fascicle, it was made into an independent scroll. It itself states: 'These precept marks originate from within the "Vinaya Piṭaka Chapter" of the Brahmajāla Sūtra, wherein Rocana Buddha conferred the bodhisattva precept Dharma upon King Sublime Ocean and his one thousand sons.'
