Second, regarding the explanation of the name: That which causes people to be stuporous and intoxicated is called 'alcohol'; offering it for sale and handing it to others is called 'selling'; preventing this fault is the 'precept'. It is also named after that which is countered. The Dazhidulun says: Regarding alcohol, 'That which can agitate a person's mind into heedlessness is named alcohol. Not drinking any [of it] at all is named abstaining from alcohol.' The explanation is: That treatise addresses the five precepts, hence it only prevents drinking.
