Seventh, regarding the retribution received: there are three: First, the general discussion: the Sūtra of the Bodhisattva Protecting the Nation states: 'There are four kinds of dharmas of downfall for a bodhisattva: 1. not respecting others; 2. being ungrateful and flattering; 3. seeking much material gain and fame; 4. feigning goodness to display one's virtue. These are the four kinds of dharmas of downfall.' Second, specifically regarding disparaging others: as in the Sūtra on Slandering the Buddha, where ten people slandered the single Dharma Master Pratibhānakūṭa, consequently causing the Buddha's Dharma in that locality to decline somewhat. These ten people later fell into hell, undergoing the suffering of having their tongues pulled out and so forth for immeasurable kalpas, and afterwards were born blind for many lifetimes. At the very end they met Śākyamuni Buddha and went forth as monastics, undergoing ascetic practices for a long time yet ultimately attaining nothing, and later fell back again, down to the extensive explanation [in the text]. Third, specifically regarding praising oneself: such as Śāntila and others, five people in all, where four sat in the forest and one proclaimed in the village: 'There are arhats in the forest,' thereby receiving great offerings. Afterwards they fell into hell, fully experiencing all kinds of suffering. Having emerged, they were born as humans who carried litters and handled waste buckets for their original donors, down to the extensive account as in the vinaya text.
