4.45

第八、釋文者，於此篇內文別有三：初、結前生後，二、正顯戒相，三、結勸修學。初中先結前已說十重之戒，後生後當說三十八種輕。就第二、正顯戒相中，四十八戒或攝為五段，謂四十二九各指本品故。或散為四十八章，如文當知。釋文分為五段，初三十各一，後二九各一，故有五也。

Eighth, on explaining the text: within the text of this section, there are three distinct parts: first, concluding the preceding and introducing what follows; second, directly revealing the characteristics of the precepts; third, concluding with an exhortation to cultivate and train. In the first, it first concludes the ten major precepts that have already been explained, and then introduces the forty-eight minor kinds that will be explained. Concerning the second, directly revealing the characteristics of the precepts: the forty-eight precepts may be subsumed into five sections, in that four, ten, two, and nine each point to their respective chapters; or they may be distinguished into forty-eight chapters, as one should know from the text. In explaining the text, it is divided into five sections: the first three of ten each, and the latter two of nine each; hence there are five.
