4.57

初、制意者，酒為惛狂之藥，重過由此而生。《智論》有三十六失，《多論》能造四逆，唯除破僧，為過之甚，故須制也。

First, the intention of enacting [the precept]: alcohol is a drug of delusion and madness, from which severe faults arise. The Dazhidulun lists thirty-six faults; the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states that it can cause one to commit four heinous crimes, excluding only causing a schism in the saṅgha. Because it is an extreme fault, it had to be prohibited.
