Seventh, permissible and impermissible circumstances: The Bodhisattva-bhūmi Precepts state: 'If sentient beings seek the Dharma from a bodhisattva, going to his place wishing to hear the Dharma, and if the bodhisattva, out of anger, resentment, stinginess, or jealousy, does not explain it for them, this is called an offense of numerous offenses, which is an offense arising from affliction. If it is out of laziness and indolence, it is an offense not arising from affliction. It is not an offense if: tīrthikas seek faults; if one is gravely ill; if one is insane; if knowing that not speaking will tame them; if the Dharma one practices is not yet well mastered; if knowing that the other person cannot be respectful and compliant, and their deportment is untidy; if those of dull faculties would give rise to fear upon hearing the deep and wondrous Dharma; if knowing that having heard it, their perverse views will increase; if having heard it, they will disparage and regress; if having heard it, they will speak of it to evil persons.'
