五、闕緣者，闕初緣犯初篇重戒，以於非怨境起瞋等故。闕第二緣得輕方便罪，以無瞋心餘非重故。次闕第三緣得重方便，雖不起身口，瞋等重故。次闕第四緣亦重方便，以事非究竟故。

Fifth, lacking conditions: lacking the first condition constitutes an offense against the major precepts of the first section, because one gives rise to anger and so forth toward a non-adversarial object. Lacking the second condition incurs a minor preparatory offense, because when there is no angry mind the remainder is not grave. Next, lacking the third condition incurs a major preparatory offense, because although one does not initiate bodily or verbal actions, anger and so forth are grave. Next, lacking the fourth condition also incurs a major preparatory offense, because the act is not completed.
