Sixth, degrees of gravity also has three aspects. In terms of the offense, there are three: if burning damages living beings or damages others' property, both constitute actual major offenses. Setting fire to burn mountains, houses, and other such things is not what a bodhisattva ought to do, hence an offense of light defilement is adjudicated. According to whether the destruction of life and damage to property is more or less, and depending on whether the criticism incurred by setting fire is shallow or deep, there are lighter and graver [offenses]. In terms of the mind, there are distinctions of weak, middling, and intense. In terms of the matter, the criticism incurred also varies across the three grades; that each has lighter and graver [offenses] can be known.
