Eighth, explaining the text: In the text there are four parts: first, citing the principle to make a general prescription; second, determining it with respect to persons; third, reprimanding violation and praising compliance; fourth, concluding the offense for deliberate violation. In the former, seniority is clarified based on the order of receiving the precepts, and this applies to sitting and all other matters. The Vinaya states: 'Seeing a senior, one should rise and should not remain seated; seeing a junior, one should not rise,' and so forth. Second, below 'regardless of', in determining it with respect to persons, someone explains: 'It causes the four assemblies to sit mixed together to demonstrate seniority.' Now this is explained differently: within the bhikṣu assembly, seniority is determined internally, and so it is for the other assemblies. Thus seniority is distinct, and male and female, monastic and lay, are not mixed together. Third, below 'do not be like', distinguishing the incorrect to reveal the correct: 'do not be like', etc., sets aside the incorrect so that one may abandon it; 'my Buddha-dharma', etc., reveals the correct so that one may cultivate it. Fourth, below 'Yet a bodhisattva', concluding the offense for violating the prescription may be understood.
