6.158

初、制意者，若不解大乘經律持犯輕重，而為人作師者，有四：一、令真法滅，以闕傳故；二、令非法行，以錯傳故；三、誤所化，令他不至解脫處故；四、增自惡業，以貪名利故。是故須制也。

First, the intent of the prescription: If one does not understand the Mahāyāna sūtras and vinaya, or what constitutes keeping or violating, lightness or gravity, yet acts as a master for others, four [faults] arise: first, causing the true Dharma to perish, because transmission is lacking; second, causing the non-Dharma to be practiced, because transmission is erroneous; third, misleading those being transformed, preventing others from reaching the place of liberation; fourth, increasing one's own evil karma, through greed for fame and gain. Therefore it must be prescribed.
