Eighth, explaining the text: therein are five [parts]: 1. citing the fault to cause one to abandon it; 2. citing the virtue to prescribe cultivation; 3. hearing of wrongdoing and being urged to grieve; 4. comparing it to personally committing it oneself; 5. intentionally acting and adjudicating the offense. In the first, it first cites originally going forth with a good mind, and next, for the sake of fame and profit, speaking of the precepts before the king and so forth to bind them. From 'eating themselves' downward, it is revealed by metaphor. The Padmamukha Sūtra says: 'The Buddha told Ānanda: Just as when a lion dies, whether in the sky, in the water, or on land, no sentient being will eat the flesh of that lion's corpse; only worms born from the lion's own body eat the flesh of the lion. Ānanda! My Buddha-Dharma cannot be destroyed by others; it is the evil monks within my Dharma who destroy the Buddha-Dharma that I accumulated through diligent practice and hardship over three great asaṃkhyeya kalpas.' The explanation says: the Buddha-Dharma cannot be destroyed by outsiders, hence it says 'not tīrthikas' and so forth. 2. Under 'if one has received the Buddha's precepts' downward, in citing virtue to prescribe cultivation, it prescribes protecting the precepts with utmost sincerity, like an affectionate mother caring for an only child, or like a filial son serving his parents, never forgetting for a moment. 3. From 'yet hearing' downward, it clarifies hearing of wrongdoing and being urged to grieve. Therein, it first grieves over sharing present suffering; afterwards, from 'rather personally' downward, it extends to entering the evil destinies; all of which can be known. 4. In comparing it to personally committing it oneself, there are directly committing it and serving as causes and conditions for its destruction. 'Lacking a filial and compliant mind' is the cause of destroying the Dharma. 5. From 'if intentionally' downward, it clarifies intentionally acting and adjudicating the offense, as can be known.
