If one is a disciple of the Buddha, one should sit in proper order according to the Dharma: those who received the precepts earlier sit in front, and those who received the precepts later sit behind. Regardless of age, whether bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, nobles, kings, princes, or even paṇḍakas and male or female slaves, in all cases those who received the precepts earlier must sit in front, and those who received the precepts later must sit in sequence. One must not be like the foolish people of non-Buddhist traditions, who, whether old or young, have no front or back and sit without order, like the custom of soldiers and slaves. Within my Buddha-Dharma, those who are senior sit first, and those who are junior sit later. If a bodhisattva does not sit in proper order, they commit a duṣkṛta offense.
