If a disciple of the Buddha has left the household life with good intentions, but for the sake of fame and profit explains the Buddha's precepts before kings and officials, arbitrarily imposing bindings upon monks, nuns, and precept-holding bodhisattva disciples, like the law for prisoners, like the law for soldiers and slaves—this is like worms within a lion's body feeding upon the lion's own flesh, not worms from elsewhere. Such a disciple of the Buddha destroys the Buddha-Dharma from within, whereas non-Buddhists and heavenly demons cannot destroy it. One who has received the Buddha's precepts should protect the Buddha's precepts as one would cherish an only child, or serve one's parents; they must not be broken. When a bodhisattva hears the sound of non-Buddhists and evil people defaming and breaking the Buddha's precepts with wicked words, it is no different than having three hundred spears pierce one's heart, or having a thousand knives and ten thousand clubs beating one's body. One would rather enter hell oneself for a hundred kalpas than hear even once the sound of evil people defaming and breaking the Buddha's precepts with wicked words. How much more so should one not break the Buddha's precepts oneself, or cause others conditions for destroying the Dharma, being devoid of a filial mind! If one intentionally does so, one commits a duṣkṛta offense.
