At that time, when Śākyamuni Buddha first sat beneath the bodhi tree and accomplished unsurpassed right awakening, he first formulated the bodhisattva prātimokṣa: filial obedience to parents, teachers, the Saṃgha, and the Three Jewels; filial obedience is the dharma of reaching the ultimate path; filiality is called precepts, and is also called restraint. The Buddha immediately emitted boundless radiant light from his mouth. At that time, a great assembly of a hundred myriad kotis, all the bodhisattvas, the eighteen Brahmā [heavens], the sons of gods of the six desire [heavens], and the kings of the sixteen great nations joined their palms and with utmost sincerity listened to the Buddha recite the Mahāyāna precepts of all Buddhas.
