"If a disciple of the Buddha has newly left the household and does not yet have understanding, yet relying on being clever and possessing worldly wisdom, or relying on high and noble status or advanced age, or relying on great clan, noble family, great understanding, great merit, or abundant wealth and the seven treasures, out of such arrogance and conceit does not consult and receive the scriptures and vinaya from senior Dharma masters; and even if that Dharma master is of a lowly clan, young in years, from a humble background, poor, and deficient in the sense faculties, yet truly possesses virtue and completely understands all the scriptures and vinaya; yet the newly learning bodhisattva must not look at the Dharma master's social class and clan and fail to come consult and receive the supreme truth from the Dharma master—if they fail to do so, they commit a duṣkṛta offense."
