The commentary states: The third ground is named "Luminous" because it is the Ground of Radiance (prabhākarī-bhūmi). Next, in the mode of practice, there are two: for one's own benefit, and for benefiting others. The first also has two: knowing what expresses, and knowing what is expressed. This is the first. "Samādhi-comprehending wisdom" is because, relying on superior concentration, the three wisdoms are generated. "Dharma gates of the Buddhas of the three times" is because the collections of names, phrases, and syllables of the twelve divisions of the teaching encompass all that expresses. "Repetitive recitations" refers to geya (verses that repeat); since these are not definitive teachings, they are set up before in contrast to "prophecies" (vyākaraṇa). "Direct speech" refers to sūtra; this consists only of prose, and is set up next in contrast to chanted "verses" (gāthā). "Spoken without request" is udāna (spontaneous expositions). "Rules of discipline" is nidāna (introductory settings). "Buddha realms" is jātaka (birth stories). "Past events" is itivṛttaka (tales of past events). "Direct and vast" is vaipulya (expanded teachings). "Unprecedented" is adbhutadharma (marvels). "Discussions" is upadeśa (instructions). The phrase "identical in name" means they are of one kind of names, phrases, and syllables. "Distinct in meaning" means they are unfolded into twelve divisions.
