The commentary says: The fifth bhūmi. Mentioning the chapter as 'Illumination of Wisdom' is because one begins to dual-illuminate. The practice of the bhūmi has two parts: the intrinsic share and superior progression. The former also has two: wisdom and supernormal powers. This is the first. The general designation 'the class of the arising of the ten powers' is because it gives rise to all practices of merit. First, 'with one wisdom' to 'the power-class of possibilities' refers to the power of knowing what is possible and what is impossible. Second, the power of knowing the karmas of oneself and others. Third, the power of knowing various inclinations, being able to know the superior and inferior inclinations of the six destinies; current inclinations are called 'fruit desires'. Fourth, the power of knowing various realms, because one knows the lineages. Fifth, the power of knowing the faculties as superior or inferior. Sixth, the power of knowing dhyāna and liberation, being able to know the distinction between the concentrations of ordinary beings and sages; 'right concentration' refers to the sages. Seventh, the power of knowing the paths leading to all destinies, being able to know the expedients leading to the fruits; that is, knowing that the vehicle is the cause that must reach the place of the fruit, and that the vehicle is the fruit arising from the path of the causal vehicle, as the Abhidharma says that one comprehends the objects subsumed by the Great and Small Vehicle teachings. Eighth, the power of knowing death and rebirth; 'knowing all dharmas with the five eyes' means, citing the general number by analogy, the wisdom eye, the Dharma eye, and so forth know all dharmas, seeing all rebirths with the divine eye. Ninth, the power of recollecting former abodes. Tenth, the power of exhaustion of defilements: all those who experience [karmic retribution] in the present life and so forth, because the afflictions that moisten rebirth are extinguished, and the ignorance that initiates karma is extinguished.
