The commentary says: Fifth, the entrustment. 'Inexpressible' is the name of a number. Taking this number as one, it accumulates up to hundreds of thousands of Gaṅgā sands of Dharma gates. As for 'the Gaṅgā River,' the Anavatapta Lake atop Mount Gandhamādana flows out into four rivers; the water of this eastern river is more than forty li wide. In Sanskrit it should be called 'Gaṅgā'; there is no distinct, direct translation, but the meaning is 'coming from the heavenly court.' The source of the river on the mountain peak cannot be seen by humans. As the Abhidharmakośa says: without supernormal powers one cannot reach it, one only sees the water pouring down from on high. People of the time consequently said it came from the heavenly court. One grain of sand of this river is taken as one, its number reaching up to hundreds of thousands. With respect to those gates, this present tenth Chapter on the Mind-Ground is like the tip of a single hair. The Buddha entrusted it, saying: 'This is what the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the three periods have spoken and studied; I have cultivated it for many kalpas and thus achieved buddhahood.' Radiating light was not done merely once, hence it says 'light after light.' He addressed the Buddhas of the pure and defiled lands atop the thousand petals: 'Each of you turn and transform all sentient beings.' The Buddhas and others expounded it successively.
