The commentary says: In the sixth [mind], that of non-retrogression, "the non-retrogressing mind" introduces the chapter section. Proceeding exclusively forward without wavering is called the non-retrogressing mind. An ancient master states: Ordinary beings possess two types of training-nature; prior [to this] they are termed external ordinary beings, whereas the thirty minds prior to the bhūmis are termed internal ordinary beings. Now, one does not regress into being an external ordinary being. "Does not give rise to newly cultivated views" means that one subdues conceptual afflictions. "Does not give rise to the habitual causes resembling a self or a person" means that one gradually subdues innate afflictions. Although one enters into transmigration within the karma of the three realms, one practices the position of emptiness and does not regress. Furthermore, because one is liberated from the obstacles of active manifestation and conjunctively practices the middle-path object and wisdom in the supreme sense, one's practice does not retrogress. Moreover, with respect to the emptiness of intrinsic nature, one's right mindfulness does not retrogress. Realizing emptiness gives rise to understanding, which is why it says "contemplative wisdom born of emptiness." "Continuously such-like" means that by progressively mounting the superior mind one enters into non-duality. It concludes by stating: Constantly giving rise to the mind directed toward emptiness, pure in the One Vehicle, this is "the non-retrogressing single path and single illumination."
