The Commentary states: To trade sentient beings, treating their separation as one's pleasure, or to traffic in coffins, necessarily wishing for people's deaths—no base livelihood surpasses these. Livelihood conditions that are without offense are plentiful in the world; therefore, the bodhisattva is prohibited from them, and an infraction constitutes an offense. Regarding the 'six domestic animals': the Rites of Zhou states that oxen, horses, dogs, sheep, pigs, and chickens constitute the six. In principle, this actually applies to all animals. Regarding 'how much less may one teach others to do so': since benefiting others is foremost, one's own action is mentioned to highlight that involving others [is even worse]. With the exception of base occupations, other proper commerce is prohibited for those of the path but permitted for the laity. As the Upāsakaśīla-sūtra states: when a layperson acquires wealth, they should divide it into four portions: one portion to support parents, wife, and children; two portions for lawful commerce; and the remaining one portion to store and accumulate.
