Commentary: 'Master of Dharma exposition' refers to an expounder of the Dharma. 'Master of Dharma practice' refers to a guardian of the canon, etc. 'Master of the monastery' refers to a director of administrative duties. 'Master of transformation' refers to one who transforms the secular and protects the Dharma. 'Master of seated meditation' refers to one who teaches śamatha and vipaśyanā. 'Master of coming and going' refers to one who leads the assembly in wandering. In generally acting as a leader of others, benevolence and righteousness are supreme. The lion pulling out [arrows from] his flank to rescue the young monkey, and the deer king in the Deer Park offering himself to die in place of a pregnant doe, are examples of this. 'As if it were one's own possession' has two meanings: first, do not use it arbitrarily as if it were one's own; second, do not be stingy with it as if it were one's own when it ought to be applied. Now, in this precept, the aspect of failing to protect incurs a duṣkṛta offense; in terms of the property damaged or stolen, it incurs a pārājika.
