自下九戒開正施故、遮橫取故、避邪緣故、趣正乘故、發願求故、立誓厭故、離難故、無亂故、利樂故，所為應知。

The following nine precepts are to be understood in terms of their purposes: opening correct giving, preventing unlawful taking, avoiding corrupting conditions, proceeding toward the correct vehicle, making vows to seek [virtue], taking oaths to cultivate revulsion, escaping disasters, eliminating distraction, and benefiting and gladdening [beings].
