The Commentary states: The Nirvāṇa-sūtra says that a bodhisattva dreads the path of the two vehicles just as one who cherishes life fears discarding their body. Abandoning the Great and turning toward the Lesser runs contrary to the bodhisattva path; therefore it must be prohibited. Question: When the mind turns its back on the Mahāyāna, why is the infraction of the precept merely minor? Answer: This refers to disparaging a specific teaching, not completely turning away [from the Mahāyāna as a whole]. Hence, as the Bodhisattvabhūmi states, if one does not slander it but reverently defers to the Tathāgata, even though one lacks faith and understanding, there is no violation. As for 'eternally abiding sūtras and vinaya': 'eternally abiding' is what is expressed, and 'sūtras and vinaya' are the expressions that denote it. Furthermore, the Buddhas of the three periods of time preach them identically and practice them identically without alteration. If one follows the two vehicles in slandering the emptiness of dharmas and the like, that is termed 'false views'.
