Regarding 'severing the seed of the nature of great compassion': this is because eating leads to killing. Regarding 'seeing [him], they flee': even a dove pursued by a hawk did not lose its terror under Śāriputra's shadow; how much more so in the position of one who eats them? Regarding 'eating meat brings boundless offenses': as in the Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of the Omniscient Brightness Sage Not Eating Meat, it extensively illustrates the faults of eating it. That sage was Maitreya himself; when he attains Buddhahood, he will prohibit meat-eating as a major offense, fully as explained therein.
