Above, the existence of the time was explained; below, the existence of causes is explained, as well as the explanation that true notions should be generated because of this. The text is further divided into two: first, clarifying that true notions are generated due to the existence of four causes; second, specifically correlating them with the sutra. As for the four causes: following the previous explanation of the time, the Buddha, in order to reveal that there are four causes within such an evil time, [states]: first, having long cultivated the practice of the three trainings; second, encountering buddhas and accumulating superior causes; third, being embraced by the buddhas; fourth, although lacking the three trainings, accumulated causes, and embracing, due to being associated with the karmic fruition of merit, being able to generate faith—that is, that person has no obstruction of phenomena with respect to it, so through the conjunction with merit they generate faith. In an evil period, because of possessing these four causes, they can be like this, able to generate true notions regarding the dharma of true reality. The meaning of Vasubandhu's treatise is: because in the future period there are bodhisattvas who internally possess the virtues of the three trainings, and these same bodhisattvas externally encounter good conditions and plant three kinds of causes in the presence of the buddhas, one should know that such persons are able to generate true notions. Therefore, the verse says: / In that evil age, / The bodhisattva is complete in the three virtues, / Not empty, because there is reality. / It is these bodhisattvas that the Buddha completely knows and sees: possessing upholding of the precepts, cultivating merit, and acquiring the birth of merit; and because of possessing wisdom, the Buddha completely knows and sees that they are free from the grasping at persons and phenomena, each with its four and eight faults.
