Fourth, where the sūtra says "[they will] generate and grasp immeasurable aggregates of merit" and so on, explains the fourth [point]: the upholding of merit. The text is divided into two: first, correlation with the sūtra, and second, explanation by answering objections. In the sūtra, it speaks separately of "generating such [merits]" and "grasping such [merits]"; here they are cited together, hence it says "generate and grasp immeasurable merits." In the explanation answering objections, it says: "'generating' means when the merit is properly arising," meaning that merit properly arises through active manifestation; "'grasping' means when that [manifestation] ceases, because it upholds the seeds," meaning that having previously performed deeds of merit, although they do not arise at present, because the seeds of merit follow along, after the active manifestation has ceased, within the body there is only the upholding of the seeds. Therefore, Vasubandhu says: "'generating' is because it is the cause capable of generating," the active manifestation being capable of perfuming and thus called the generating cause; "'grasping' has the meaning of the fruit of the self-nature cultivated by perfuming," for after the active manifestation ceases, there is only the self-nature of the seeds cultivated by perfuming, which has the meaning of the fruit generated by the active-manifestation cause. The two treatises do not differ; or in that treatise, it is explained conversely to this. However, contemplating the intention of the sūtra: when the semblance Dharma is about to be extinguished, sentient beings who possess morality and the like are born in that time and are capable of generating the real mark; namely, in an evil time there are evil sentient beings, yet it does not say "born through aspiration," but rather that they are capable of generating the real mark.
