(此依魏本文解,什本少異。)阿僧祇者顯微塵無數,此文諸本或有或無。復既問塵多不,何須自言微塵無數?是以諸本多無。正為問中有二意,一、若不明見多塵,則不破色身一執故,須問顯塵多,成前細作方便;二、顯色身是一,破此得為多塵,則知微塵雖多,破則非微塵,生後無所見方便,故自他色身為微塵已,復問微塵多不。
(This is explained according to the Wei translation; Kumārajīva's translation differs slightly.) "Asaṃkhyeya" reveals that the dust particles are countless; this text is present in some versions and absent in others. Furthermore, since he already asked whether the dust particles are many, why would he need to state himself that the dust particles are countless? For this reason, most versions do not have it. Specifically, there are two intentions in the inquiry: first, if one does not clearly see the multiplicity of dust particles, one will not break down the clinging to the oneness of the material body; hence he must ask to reveal that the dust are many, completing the preceding skillful means of subtle analysis. Second, to reveal that the material body is one, and by breaking it down one obtains many dust particles, whereby one knows that although the dust particles are many, when broken down they are not dust particles, giving rise to the subsequent skillful means of having nothing seen. Therefore, after reducing the material bodies of self and others to dust particles, he asks again whether the dust particles are many.
